GIVING GLORY TO GOD IN THE WORKPLACE
Dr. Cecilio Pedro, president and chief executive officer of the Lamoyan Happee Toothpaste Corporation, makers of Happee toothpaste, poses with members of the Rotary Clubs of Intramuros, Manila Taft, Pasay Harrison and Manila South, after he delivered a speech during the joint meeting of the clubs today, August 28, 2008, at the Ilustrado Restaurant, Intramuros, Manila. Dr. Pedro attributed the huge success of his company in his policy of “giving glory to God in the workplace”, which means, he said, conducting Bible studies and prayer meetings among his workers. Another destructive war is engulfing RP
AS the death toll in the on-going armed conflict in Mindanao continues to rise,
with latest reports saying there are now 180 people killed in the spate of
fightings in the affected areas, another equally destructive war seems to be
engulfing other parts of the country, particularly Baguio City in Northern
Luzon.
Reports from ABS CBN New Online are saying that Filipino youngsters are at
present banding and grouping themselves into gangs and other juvenile groups,
and are now wrecking havoc on their lives and in the community where they live
with their regular deadly gang wars, violent rumbles and inane clashes.
The same reports claim that as a result of these gang wars in Baguio City, many
of their young members, mostly minors, have been killed in the past several days
and, if authorities fail to check the trend, more are expected to die in the
aftermath of the rising and seemingly unstoppable juvenile disputes.
Many are hoping that the intended dialogue of these youth gangs on Saturday at
the conference hall of the Baguio City Hall will bring about a “cessation of
hostilities”, and a redirection of the kids’ lives.
But, the more important question that is crying out for an answer at this point
is this: Why is this happening?
More to the point, what has gone wrong with the Filipino youth, not only in
Baguio City but, if other media reports are to be believed, in other parts of
the country as well?
What has happened to Filipino children who, at the time of our national hero,
Jose Rizal, were called by him “the hope of the Fatherland”?
The reason for such degeneration could be as many as they are varied.
Many will cite the breakdown of family discipline and the failure of present-day
Filipino parents to assert their authority over their children, leading the kids
to stray away from home.
Still, many will say that the Filipino youth has gone wayward in recent years
because of the rising influence of his peers, usually from schools or from his
neighborhood and who, more often than not, are equally wayward and
undisciplined.
All of these justifications maybe valid, but, to me, I am convinced in my heart
that the increasing lawlessness and lack of discipline among Filipino youngsters
could be traced right down to their sorry lack of Biblical and spiritual
learning.
For too long a time now, many of us Filipinos have grown without even having
known at least one single line of the Scriptures, since no one seems to be
interested to learn, and since no one is actually doing something to let us know
what the Bible contains.
Because we grew up without knowing the Bible and the Word of God, because we
grew up with no one teaching us about God’s commands, laws and decrees, God was
not with us all throughout our lives!
Because God was not with us as we were growing up, guess who was with us as we
crawled through our daily lives!
And because God was not with us as we were growing up, it was too easy for us to
grow up lacking in spiritual direction and moral moorings, so that God’s curses
promised in the Book of Deuteronomy in the Bible have been rained down on us.
With this kind of an environment, it was not too difficult for us to do the
biddings of the devil even in the most mundane things that we do.
The Biblical injunction for all of us has always been to teach our children the
love of God---Deuteronomy 6:5 says: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your strength”--- and this injunction is
couched in a very mandatory manner.
“Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when
you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as
symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the
doorframes ofyour houses and on your gates,” Deuteronomy 6:7-9 intones.
But the sad reality is that we have miserably failed in this divine task, and we
are now reaping the sour fruit of this failure.
We and our children shall continue to suffer for our inability to comply with
God’s direction for us to teach our children in the way they should go so that
when they grow old they will not depart from it, unless we make an effort to
make a turn around now.
In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God has provided us a way out, and this is what we should
do as a people, to save not just our youth, but all of us: “If my people, who
are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sins
and heal their land.”
